Miami Business Owner Attends

Clean Energy Conference In Washington, DC

Kent Crook, owner of Wiremasters in Miami, FL, spent a busy weekend at the American Clean Energy Now conference, that included lobbying Florida Senator Bill Nelson and Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

A town hall meeting in Washington, DC, with Sen. John Kerry and Capitol Hill meetings with Sen. Bill Nelson and Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen were part of a recent weekend conference for Kent Crook, a Miami-Dade business owner with an active interest in renewable energy.

Along with Mayor Paul Vrooman of Cutler Bay, Crook was part of 30 Florida leaders who spent July 20-22 at America Clean Energy Now, sponsored by Clean Energy Works, a coalition of over 80 organizations. Coming from 19 states, the 200 delegates represented business owners, veterans organizations, farmers, representatives of the military as well as wildlife and environmental organizations.

“They gave us training in how to answer questions from the media and the public on clean energy,” Crook says.  The Miami businessman established contact in Washington with Lance Orchid, state director for Alliance for Climate Protection, who had this to say about the conference:” In the wake of the worse environmental disaster in U.S. history, people in Florida are seeking bold action, not band-aid solutions to our energy challenges.”

Owner of Wiremasters, an electrical services company, Crook created a new division called Energy Masters over a year ago to offer services in solar installations and repairs. His employees are being retrained, through a Workforce Florida grant, so they can perform these energy-saving services.

Further reinforcing his commitment to clean energy, Crook awaits delivery of a Nissan Leaf electric car. Not long ago, he retrofitted the Chamber South headquarters in Miami-Dade County with T5 fluorescent bulbs, resulting in a 30% saving in annual energy costs.

The business owner co-hosts a weekly radio program, “Your Green Wallet”, that provides information on energy conservation and use of energy alternatives. “I’m in the business of educating people on how to save energy—from turning off light switches to using more efficient light bulbs,” he says. “We need to let our elected representatives know that now is the time for passing legislation that brings us comprehensive clean energy."
